How To Stay Accountable with the Grow Coaching Model
Introduction
How often have you made plans, and been serious about achieving them? Then life gets in the way and you scale it back and deliver half at best. Or you run out of ideas to overcome the hurdles in your way.
Everyone can fall victim to this at times, but ADHD can add another layer of difficulty. It may sound simple, but structure is the key to overcoming this challenge. Here we explore the Grow Coaching Model and how this can be used to help with accountability to achieve your goals.

What this means for you
When investing in learning and growth for yourself, your family or your business, it’s a time and financial commitment. You are looking for a positive outcome, whether that’s feeling better about a situation and more energised, or creating a huge change in yourself, your career or your business.
Our ADHD coaching methodology at Avita draws on many sources. These include Positive Psychology and other neurodiversity coaching techniques, but one we invariably use as a basis for sessions is the Grow Coaching Model.
How do you feel?
Many people find it hard to know what tangible benefit coaching will bring them, asking, “Is it therapy?”, or, “coaching for what?”.
Psychologists often talk about us being at 0 when life is okay – just ticking along, with nothing huge happening. Therapy and interventions are used when we dip into the minus figures after some trauma.
Coaching on the other hand is a little different. It focuses on what we can positively do to become the very best version of ourselves. Coaching is tailored to help us sort out dilemmas, find life balance, and discover where we want our life to go or how we want it to be. It helps us navigate difficult decisions and supports us to get better at what we do.
In ADHD coaching, we figure out what we need to do to support us in reaching not just 0 in terms of feeling okay but reaching for what we call a +5 life – that is the best version of ourselves and what makes us happy.
Why? Because it keeps us and you accountable
The GROW model works through setting your Goals, determining what’s Realistic, what your Options are to get there, and then critically, What Next? Using this as a framework, we identify what you need to do to reach your goal, what and who is available to you to reach them, and when and how you are going to deliver.
We love it for ADHD because it helps to focus a busy mind by having clarity on goals; understanding your lived reality is critical to make sure the actions we plan to take are genuinely achievable. Overwhelm and stress actively stop our brains from problem solving, so incorporating exploring other options and opportunities in a calm environment gives the ADHD brain a space to think calmly. But most importantly accountability is key to getting things done for the dopamine-seeking ADHD brain - a clear and defined way forward with delivery times focuses the mind to deliver.
Overcoming the habits holding you back
One of the hardest parts of change is identifying and doing the actions needed to get there. Before you know it, you’ve reverted to the old problems of life getting in the way or running out of ideas, and nothing’s changed.
Our brains are primed to use old pathways, formed as habits over time. This means that building new ways of doing things and rewiring your brain is hard, and in times of stress, our minds revert quickly to well-known actions.
In each session, using this GROW model we always work with you to identify the actions you need to take and support you through the challenges, fears and events so that you can continue to make change happen, and it gives us a reference point to track action taken and the real reasons for sabotage.
