A Quick Look At The Transformative Power Of ADHD Coaching
Introduction
The ADHD mind is a wonderful and vibrant tapestry of energy, creativity and original thinking. But with that comes the challenge of navigating the regularities of everyday life, from studies to work and social situations. These challenges can sometimes feel insurmountable.
ADHD coaching taps into the tools that help you counter those boundaries and tap back into the power your mind already possesses. By understanding what’s holding you back and the hurdles in your path, you can unleash your true potential and feel happier and more fulfilled.
In this quick guide, we’ll walk you through what outcomes to expect from ADHD coaching, and how it can help transform your life, wherever your needs lie.
What is ADHD coaching?
ADHD coaching is a type of targeted neurodiversity coaching that helps people with an ADHD diagnosis, someone who suspects they have ADHD, or even a parent, partner, teacher or manager working or living alongside someone with ADHD.
Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) defines ADHD coaching as:
“Coaching is an intervention that complements medication and other non-pharmacologic alternatives. As a specialty within the broader field of coaching, ADHD coaching is a practical intervention that specifically targets the core impairments of ADHD such as planning, time management, goal setting, organization and problem solving.”
How do you feel?
Many people find it hard to know what tangible benefit coaching will bring them, asking, “Is it therapy?”, or, “coaching for what?”.
Psychologists often talk about us being at 0 when life is okay – just ticking along, with nothing huge happening. Therapy and interventions are used when we dip into the minus figures after some trauma.
Coaching on the other hand is a little different. It focuses on what we can positively do to become the very best version of ourselves. Coaching is tailored to help us sort out dilemmas, find life balance, and discover where we want our life to go or how we want it to be. It helps us navigate difficult decisions and supports us to get better at what we do.
In ADHD coaching, we figure out what we need to do to support us in reaching not just 0 in terms of feeling okay but reaching for what we call a +5 life – that is the best version of ourselves and what makes us happy.
How can ADHD coaching help me?
Everyone has a different set of challenges and goals when they begin their coaching journey. ADHD can present common themes and challenges but each version of it is unique to us. Here are some ways that ADHD coaching can help you, depending on your life stage and predominate needs:
Business Growth and Change – – You might feel stuck in a repeating pattern and finding it hard to know what to change and how in order to shift your business to the next level. ADHD means we can either spend all our time thinking about big picture stuff and missing the details (like invoicing!), or we get stuck in the weeds of delivery and feel so overwhelmed we can’t think beyond what’s in front of us. Our ADHD coaching has supported people in identifying the problem, the solution, what steps they need to take to get there, and keeping clients accountable to reach the goal.
Personal Growth – We all hit times and points in life where we reassess if we are where we want to be, or what we need to thrive. At Avita, we have helped many people figure out what they are good at, what they enjoy, what’s holding them back and what actions they need to take, in work and life. Throughout this journey, we support them whilst they refocus their life to success.
Dilemma – In business or our personal lives, we all experience dilemmas. Sometimes we don’t always want to chat them through with family, friends or colleagues who might bring their own opinions into the mix. Coaching works particularly well to support this as your Coach won’t bring emotional involvement to the table and can support you to make the decisions you need without distractions from elsewhere.
Parenting – The needs that normal family life brings are big enough, but add in any additional needs from children with ADHD (immense), caring for older relatives and balancing building a business or a demanding career, or managing all of it with your own ADHD brain and chuck in menopause for good measure, and we can all start to need a bit of help to navigate life. At Avita, we specialise in supporting parents to find the right balance, figure out problems (diagnoses, the right schooling), and how to look after themselves and their families through testing times.
We all have goals we want to reach; challenges we’re striving to overcome and times when we feel stuck. Partnering with an Avita Coach can change your life, setting you on a path to greater personal and professional fulfilment.
